Although his popularity among Barcelona fans has fluctuated over the years, most Cules would be disappointed to see a servant as loyal as Sergi Roberto leave the club after spending his whole career in the Blue and Garnet jersey.

Sergi Roberto had the opportunity to say his final goodbyes to his beloved Barcelona today after his contract expired. According to SPORT, the Catalans planned a tribute for him, which was attended by some of the departing captain’s former colleagues, including Carles Puyol, Xavi Hernandez, and Gerard Pique.

The outgoing midfielder burst into tears as he reflected on his time with Barcelona. Speaking about his time at the club, Roberto said:

“I’ve been fortunate to fulfill a dream by wearing this jersey. I spent the happiest years of my life at La Masia, and I am extremely grateful to the club for everything it has given me. I wanted to say farewell to the fans on the pitch, but it wasn’t feasible, and I want to thank them for everything since their high expectations helped me improve.”

The former midfielder recalls his important milestones with the Blaugrana club:

“I recall my first-team debut under Pep Guardiola, as well as my promotion from the reserves. I’ve always been a Barcelona supporter, and to be wearing the captain’s armband is both a source of pride and a fantasy I never anticipated.”

“There have been 373 matches and 25 crowns in all these years. I’d like to thank my teammates, all of the coaches, board members, and club staff since none of this would be possible without them.”

Without a doubt, Roberto’s most memorable moment at Barcelona was his goal against PSG, which completed the legendary remontada. During the ceremony, the former captain spoke about the goal:

“It’s a goal I’ll never forget because of what it meant to Barcelona supporters. It’s one of the most fantastic experiences I’ve had on the pitch and among the crowd. I was blessed to be there, and the night turned out to be spectacular. “The fans will never forget that goal and everything that game represented.”

While bidding his farewell to Barcelona, the midfielder made it plain that he intends to continue playing football professionally:

“I’m departing happy and appreciative since I gave my all to the club of my life. Now we’ll start a new chapter with another team and in another place, but I’m confident we’ll meet again in the future.”

Finally, the versatile athlete applauded La Masia and offered some advise to the academy’s young players:

“La Masia is the center of the club. We have amazing players, but they must be patient. I always told my parents that at Barça, they have to let you go; you shouldn’t leave on your own.

“If young players want to pursue their dreams, they should work hard and push themselves since they are at the world’s biggest club, and they will undoubtedly be given an opportunity. It’s worth the effort to stay here.”
